Building Engines is looking for a motivated and collaborative Payroll Specialist to help us administer payroll (TRAXPayroll), oversee certain aspects of benefits, manage some aspects of onboarding and the HRIS (Bamboo), and other compensation-related projects.  Reporting directly to the Accounting Manager and indirectly to People Operations, the Building Engines’ Payroll Specialist will work closely with both teams and serve as the primary contact for all payroll questions and communications to employees. This is a new position and an opportunity to join a growing Finance team, collaborate with a growing People team, and make a sizable impact on employee experience at an exciting fast growth tech company in downtown Boston.

What you’ll do

  • Prepare and process bimonthly (and special off-cycle as needed), multi-state payroll for 130+ and growing employees via Bamboo TRAXPayroll.
  • Data entry of all employment related information (new hires, status changes, benefit deductions, terminations, etc.) into TRAX.
  • Audit all data to ensure there are no errors and resolve any mistakes that are uncovered
  • Perform a regular review of non-exempt data to ensure both the employees and their managers are entering time worked and time off properly as well as approving their information in accordance with the payroll calendar.
  • Perform various monthly reconciliations.
  • Perform period over period flux analysis highlighting changes and material increases/decrease in compensation and related expenses.
  • Process employment verifications as needed.
  • Train employees and managers on non-exempt hours reporting.
  • Balance W-2s and assist with year-end duties including preparing for and supporting successful GAAP, SOCII, 401k and benefits audits.
  • Oversee and administer the company’s transit program (bus, T-pass and parking)
  • Assist in administering other benefits programs such as 401k, COBRA, UEI and FSA.
  • Support People Operations and Finance as needed with special projects.

What we’re looking for

  • 3+ years of payroll processing experience with enterprise payroll processing systems, TRAX experience a plus.
  • Experience with onboarding and HRIS maintenance/reconciliation, Bamboo experience a plus.
  • Strong understanding of tax laws across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Extremely well organized, ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high level of accuracy in a multi-task, changing environment.
  • Must be a mature, cross-functional team player with a great attitude and the ability to manage highly confidential information.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • FPC or CPP certification a plus.
