While I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions, probably because of my inability to keep them, I do love themes.

You can build a plan and rally a group of people around a theme.  A resolution is inflexible and individualistic. And as I’ve proven time and again, often unrealistically achievable.

A theme is a framework.  It can be your referenceable North Star guiding you or a team toward common goals and desired outcomes.  You can use a theme to assess what to do and what to prioritize, much more easily than a resolution.

For example, the theme for our marketing team this year at Building Engines is “Cultivating Growth.” Cultivating Growth is about everyone on our team creating long-term growth strategies and tactics in four key areas:

  1. Personal growth
  2. Professional growth
  3. Department growth, …and finally, and most importantly, aligning these with –
  4. Customer Growth!

…Making sure that what we work on and support in our department and throughout the company is designed to support our customers and their goals.

In that spirit and true to our theme for the year, our first campaign of the year is called Set the Bar Higher in 2017.”  It’s 4 curated pieces of best-practices content designed to help property teams work smarter and get better. In other words, to Grow.

We hope you enjoy and if you find it useful, share this content with your colleagues.  If you have or are perhaps inspired to create your own theme for the New Year, I’d love to hear what they are!
